In my travels from Fairfax, VA back to Massachusetts to visit family and friends, I am often asked to pick up Pizza from Otto Pizza. Transporting over $100 worth of Pizza from the Otto locations back to Fairfax, VA requires careful planning. Here is the procedure that I use.

Prior to leaving for your trip, acquire the large one-gallon zip lock bags. You can pack approximately four slices of Otto Pizza in each zip lock bag and each pizza has approximately 6 slices. You will also want to pack food handling gloves and hand sanitizing wipes. This project will also need a large grocery insulated delivery bag.

If you are not residing in downtown Boston and you are taking an airplane from Boston back to Virginia and your flight is in the late afternoon, you should order the pizza and pay online for pickup from the Otto Harvard Square location. The key is to order the pickup for at least two hours before you will pick it up. This gives time for the pizza to cool before you pack it. Therefore, after placing the order you will need to call Otto and let them know that you are transporting the pizza from their location back to your home in Virginia.

The pickup of the pizza at the Otto Harvard Square location is challenging due to the parking. If you are in a rental car you will need to leave substantial time to either find parking in Harvard Square or ideally bring a helper that can get the pizza from the store. If you are taking a car service, then you can tip the car service extra while they wait outside while you run in and get the pizza.

Upon your arrival at Logan Airport, or at the return rental car lot, clean your hands and begin to put 4–5 pieces of pizza in a zip lock bag and seal the bag. Place the ziplock bag into the large grocery insulated delivery bag. This bag will be part of your carry on item. Alternatively, if you have a large suitcase with space, you can place the bags in your checked luggage.

If you want to alleviate the stress of picking up the pizza on your day of departure, you can execute the steps above the day before your departure. Once you pack the pizza in the zip lock bag, place the bags in the refrigerator.

In your Otto transportation experience, please CHECK CAREFULLY on the location you are ordering from! They all look alike.
