One up on Wall St. Peter Lynch

If you worked in Boston in the 1990s and walked the Devonshire route to Fanuel Hall, you passed the Fidelity building. Inside the Fidelity, Building sat one of the best Mutual Fund Managers of all time, Peter Lynch. His name is still a household name today for his work with the Magellan Fund. During this time at Fidelity, Peter Lynch managed to publish several books, one of them is “One Up On Wall Street”.

One Up on Wall St is a great trip down memory lane of companies that no longer exist, industries that have been merged, and entities that no longer make financial sense. This book is a who’s who list for some of those companies. If you are from the New England area, many of the names you will see in the book will elicit a memory about them or may cause you to pause and wonder, how did they make money in a particular entity. For example, their reference to the investment in a Lawrence, Massachusetts Savings and Loan institution?” (See, Lawrence, Massachusetts, is one of the poorest cities in the United States and is the poorest in Massachusetts.

The book is marketed with the tag line, “How To Use What You Already Know To Make Money In The Market” but given the age of this book, you may want to combine this with additional literature to learn more about the market and the investment vehicles that are now available to you. During your reading of the book, you will elicit some basic concepts that still apply today, but this book is best read for a Walk Down the Memory lane of companies that have moved onto greener pastures. Regardless of the investment advice, Peter Lynch and Devonshire street are etched in my memory forever along with that walk to Fanuel Hall.
