Think Like Hollywood When You Select Your Recruiter
In April of 2020 millions of people are out looking for a job. For the recruiting industry and the candidates, now is the time to reboot the industry.
The value from a third-party recruiting firm is the delivery of a candidate with the skills that a company is looking for. In many cases, companies work with multiple recruiters and multiple recruiters end up presenting the same candidate multiple times. In this model, it is impossible to know who should get the credit for the candidate.
Candidates should adopt the Hollywood agent model. Although the candidate will not pay the recruiter, (See reference post about the recruiting business titled: Why Talent Agents For Engineers Don’t Exist) the candidates should agree to work with one recruiter. The recruiters should inquire with the candidate if they have signed with another recruiter. This 1:1 model eliminates the multiple presentations of the same candidate to the company. This model is similar to the actors that have one agent represent them in the Hollywood industry.
Candidates working with one third party recruiter is a risk. If the candidate finds a job at a company that the recruiter does not have a relationship, then the candidate may miss out on the opportunity. This requires the candidate to perform their due diligence on the recruiter they select.
Regardless of the action the candidate selects with the recruiting industry, the candidate needs to weigh the benefit. The job searching market has a number of tools available for the non-Executive roles. It may be easier to avoid the recruiters all together and work directly through the hiring company.
For myself, I have used this model in the past. I worked directly with Bryan Scott and Pacific Partners International. When I was contacted by a recruiter for an opportunity, I would remind them that I was represented by a recruiter already. In this model, I would call Bryan if I heard about an opportunity and he would use his skills to land me an interview at the interested company.
Finding a job is hard and requires an entirely new approach that is more than a resume and a cover letter. You will need to use all of your resources and a recruiter could be involved. Before you start working with many third-party recruiters, consider working with just one recruiter.
